Amid the vibrant energy of its Soweto Campus, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) today, Friday, 7 February 2025, launched its 2025 Academic Year with a celebration of legacy and future ambition. Marking two decades since its groundbreaking merger, the event doubled as a tribute to 20 years of innovation, inclusivity, and societal impact.
In 2005, UJ emerged from the historic merger of Rand Afrikaans University, Technikon Witwatersrand, and Vista University’s Soweto campuses. This fusion of institutions was not merely structural but symbolic, but a commitment to accessible, world-class education for all. Today, UJ stands as a beacon of African excellence, with over 200,000 graduates shaping industries globally and a student body representing 80+ nations.
Quoting Zambian poet Musenga Katongo, ‘Beckoning bright lights bring events expected to excite while gears grind to guide and invite innovative insight!’, UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, reaffirmed UJ’s commitment to bold ideas and meaningful impact.
“From bold beginnings, UJ has become a crucible of ideas where diversity fuels innovation. As the University embraces its next chapter, it remains dedicated to empowering students, leading in research, and fostering a sustainable, inclusive world,” said Prof Mpedi.

The 2025 Academic Opening was more than a ceremony – it was a call to the future.
Students from various residences added to the festivities sharing their war cries and filling the Imbizo Hall at the Soweto Campus with a palpable energy.
In under two decades, UJ has emerged as a leader in Africa’s Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) while steadfastly championing pan-Africanism, transformation, equity, and access.
This commitment has led to notable achievements. UJ is now ranked #1 in South Africa and across Africa among universities under 50 years old (THE Young University Rankings), is among the top 50 institutions globally in THE Impact Rankings, and was recently named South Africa’s best institution for engineering and computer science (THE 2025 Subject Rankings).
In his address, Prof Mpedi highlighted that UJ is a place where innovation thrives, and dreams take shape. “There are many more achievements I could allude to but what is clear is that we are making a tangible difference. UJ is a place of innovation and excellence. Here, ideas flourish and dreams take shape. Whether you are a first-year student stepping into this vibrant academic environment for the first time or a returning member of our community, you are part of an institution steeped in strong values. Engage with faculty, participate in student life, and embrace the diversity that makes UJ extraordinary. Together, we are shaping a dynamic and inclusive future!” he said.
With over 600,000 applications for 2025 first-year studies, with only 10,900 students gaining admission, UJ’s 2025 cohort embodies aspiration.
Among them:
Nancy Murwa, a first-year fashion design student: “Being a student here at UJ means I get to use UJ’s resources to innovate and contribute to sustainable solutions for our communities. When I first registered with UJ, I made the choice because I found a course that would focus on what I wanted to do. It has everything I need.”
Similarly, Alvarez Tladi, a People Management student entering the College of Business and Economics, expressed his enthusiasm: “UJ’s commitment to inclusivity and societal impact resonates with me. I chose UJ because it is my dream university. My expectation this year is to have a successful first year and grab this opportunity with both hands.”

Social entrepreneur and UJ alumni DJ Sbu echoed Prof Mpedi’s sentiments and shared that UJ modelled and gave him the tools to become the person he is today, when he shared a motivational talk during the welcoming address.
He encouraged students to focus on their studies, cultivate their minds, create networks and push through any adversity.
“Your future starts here, believe in your dreams and align with people who have a vision for themselves. It all starts with you and what you think of yourself. Level up!”
