The University of Johannesburg (UJ) held a Silent Walk Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) on 10 July 2025 at its Doornfontein Campus (DFC), reaffirming its commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive society.
This initiative forms part of UJ’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and take a firm stand against the violence that disproportionately affects women and other vulnerable members of our communities.
Staff members, dressed in black to symbolise mourning, solidarity, and resistance, participated in the walk while holding placards bearing messages of support. The walk began at the Main Gate (Corner of Joe Slovo Drive and Beit Street) and concluded at the QK Building G100.
Held under the theme “Together, in silence, we will speak volumes,” the walk served as a powerful, symbolic act to honour victims and survivors of GBVF, while calling for accountability, action, and healing.
UJ’s commitment to combating GBVF
UJ has adopted a Zero-Tolerance stance toward all forms of gender-based violence and intimidation. The University continues to implement a range of initiatives aimed at raising awareness, educating the campus community, and interrupting the growing scourge of GBVF.
Key initiatives include:
- Awareness Campaigns and Training: UJ offers regular workshops and training sessions for students and staff to promote gender equality and educate participants on GBV prevention. These sessions explore how GBV manifests in daily life, how to report it, and how to access support services.
- Support Services for Survivors: Survivors of GBV have access to a comprehensive support system, including:
- Counselling through PsyCaD and Employee Wellness,
- Legal support via the Employee Relations/Transformation Unit,
- Medical care through Campus Health and Wellness (CSHW).
- Clear Policies and Reporting Protocols: UJ has established robust policies and procedures to address GBV on campus. The UJ Policy on Bullying, Harassment, Sexual Harassment, and Rape outlines the steps for reporting incidents, the investigation process, and the consequences for perpetrators.
Creating a safer campus for all
UJ remains steadfast in its mission to foster a safe and respectful environment for all members of its community. The University encourages students and staff to report any behaviour that violates its values, reinforcing a culture of accountability and care.
By continuing to speak out—silently or otherwise—UJ is helping to break the cycle of violence and build a future where everyone can thrive in safety and dignity.
