The University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted the semi-annual meeting of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) from 11 to 13 June 2025, bringing together global leaders in higher education to engage in critical conversations about the future of universities.
Hosted by the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi, the event convened presidents and vice-chancellors from across the world to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and align strategies to empower universities and the communities they serve.
Held under the theme “Impact, Innovation, Inclusivity and Integrity: Building the University of the Future,” the meeting aligned closely with UJ’s Strategic Plan 2035. These four pillars, referred to as the “Four I’s”—are also embedded in UJ’s institutional values, guiding the University’s vision and operations into the future.
The three-day programme featured the IAUP Executive Committee meeting, a series of forward-looking panel discussions, networking opportunities, cultural excursions, and a gala dinner that celebrated global academic unity.
In his welcome remarks, Prof Mpedi shared his enthusiasm for hosting the IAUP gathering. “I am truly honoured to welcome you all to UJ and Johannesburg. Although slightly delayed, this meeting brings together a community which I consider family. I thank you for making the journey from near and far, as we say in my language.”
He acknowledged the shared challenges faced by universities globally. “We are leading our institutions during turbulent times, where academic freedom and university autonomy are increasingly under threat. But as I’ve discovered in conversations with fellow leaders, these challenges are not unique to any one institution. This is why the IAUP is so important, it provides a vital platform for shared learning, collaboration and collective action.”

Prof Mpedi also called on IAUP members to continue strengthening the sense of unity and collaboration that defines the association.
IAUP President, Professor Shawn Chen, Chairman of SIAS International University in China, opened the conference by expressing gratitude to UJ. “It is a privilege to be among higher education leaders from across the globe. To Prof Mpedi and UJ, thank you for welcoming us to your dynamic institution and this vibrant city.”
Reflecting on IAUP’s legacy, Prof Chen highlighted its role in fostering global collaboration. “For nearly six decades, IAUP has connected university leaders to drive meaningful change in higher education. This is more than an association, it is a global family, a dynamic community where ideas flourish and partnerships thrive. Whether through leadership programmes or gatherings like this, we continue to expand our impact and grow stronger together.”
He also announced that the IAUP’s 60th anniversary celebration will take place later this year in South Korea.
The meeting featured a series of engaging panel discussions that explored topics such as university transformation, technology and knowledge production, diversity in institutional leadership, and promoting social justice and ethical leadership in higher education.
The conference also highlighted the potential of young changemakers. Two UJ student assistants, both entrepreneurs, were selected to travel to China to meet with like-minded peers, grow their startups, and explore new funding opportunities. This opportunity reflects the tangible outcomes that can emerge from global collaboration and student empowerment.
