​The workshops form part of the transformation-orientated initiatives by the Transformation Strategy Group (TSG) and the Transformation Forum (TMF), conducted on a national level. There are numerous objectives with regards to the regional workshops but the most important one is to explore novel techniques that will assist in addressing the challenges encountered in the teaching areas of Mathematics and African Languages.

According to the Head of Transformation Unit at UJ, Mrs Lorraine Viljoen, representatives from UJ, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Vaal University of Technology (VUT), University of Free State (UFS), Central University of Technology (CUT) and Sol Plaatje University (SPU) attended the workshops.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Governance and Operations at the Vaal University of Technology, Prof Gordon Zide stated that the importance of the HESA workshops: “Is to promote advocacy particularly on transformational issues as well as to facilitate conversation and engagement.”

The HESA workshops put a particular emphasis on Mathematics because it is imperative to demystify the notion that Mathematics is a difficult subject. Prof Gordon asserted that anyone could study and do well in Mathematics, even up to PhD level. He wishes to achieve the change in mindset of students in high schools as there is a shortage of students taking the subject at tertiary level.
