Karabo Robaya, an Accounting graduate from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), was selected by the US Embassy to study towards his Bachelor of Science in Accounting at the Alabama State University.
Karabo Robaya is a 22-year-old from Mabopani, a small township in Pretoria, who holds a National Diploma in Accounting from UJ. He is one of the students that did not qualify to study a Bachelor’s degree and opted to do a diploma instead.
Demotivated after not qualifying for a degree, and also facing financial difficulties in his first year, Robaya worked hard and proved to everyone that diplomas are just as important as degrees.
His hard work paid off as he was awarded three bursaries that helped him finance his two remaining years of study at UJ.
Karabo is now a qualified accountant. He is yet to bid farewell to South Africa later this year, heading to The United States of America to pursue his dreams.
When asked what he will miss the most about UJ, Karabo said “the Orange wave at the Varsity Cup games whenever our boytjies are on the field”.
