The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Sport Division, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) and the Civil Engineering society, successfully hosted a fundraising Golf Day on Friday, 9 May 2025, at the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club. This event included a prize giving dinner to foster collaboration and community engagement, with the primary goal of raising funds to support financially disadvantaged UJ Sport and Civil Engineering students with their financial commitments.

The event garnered significant support from the corporate sector and UJ alumni, with 20 sponsors contributing to the cause. Notable sponsors included FNB, Infra Consult, Nedbank CIB, Mark White Nissan, Adapt IT, Abbeydale, Gold Reef City, Mentos, Ten Space Winehouse, Ukhuni Furniture, Roller G’s Marketing, Kay Tech, PPS Insurance, Form Scaff, Shield Platinum Holdings, Raid Risk Management, Now Furniture and Accessories, and FS.

Beyond a day on the greens, the UJ Golf Day featured a networking dinner that fostered collaboration and community engagement among attendees. The primary objective of this initiative was to generate crucial funds to support financially disadvantaged students within UJ Sport and Civil Engineering, specifically to facilitate their participation in essential travel and excursion opportunities.

Mr. Ebrahim Boomgaard, Senior Manager: UJ Sport Support Services, highlighted the event’s success: “The event was made possible through meticulous strategic planning, invaluable in-kind sponsorships, and the generous support of our corporate partners and participants. Through entry fees, direct donations, and engaging on-the-day activities, the Golf Day not only generated vital funds but also significantly strengthened our relationships with alumni and corporate entities and paved the way for promising future partnerships.”

He added, “Abbeydale requested to include two UJ Engineering students in their two teams ensuring networking opportunities for the students with a company operating in their sector. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees underscores the impact and potential of this initiative as a sustainable and impactful annual fundraising model.”

The winners on the course were Cricket South Africa, who clinched first place. The subsequent rankings saw University Sport South Africa 2nd place, Lions Cricket in 3rd place, Expo Centre in 4th place, Raid in 5th place, UJ Legends in 6th place, Mark White in 7th place, Abbey-Dale 2 in 8th place, Tshwane University of Technology in 9th place, Shield Platinum in 10th place, Mapei in 11th place, Form Scaff in 12th place, Abbey Dale 1 in 13th place, and Le Roux and Friends in 14th place.
