The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Athletics team clinched a strong third-place finish at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Cross-Country Championships held at Tshwane University of Technology on Saturday, 4 October 2025.
The “Orange Army” secured a total of eight medals – one gold, five silver, and two bronze – placing them just two medals shy of the top spot. UJ finished behind the University of Pretoria in first place and North-West University (Potchefstroom) in second.
Medal Highlights
UJ’s sole gold medal came from the dominant performance of the Men’s 10km team, leading the charge for the university. UJ’s medal haul was padded by five silver medals, showcasing the team’s depth across various events:
Team Events: Both the men’s 2km team and the women’s 10km team claimed silver.
Relays: The Short-Mixed Relay team of Khunedi Mashishi, Faith Mabhena, Sanele Msomi, and Boikanyo Motlhamme earned a silver. The Long-Mixed Relay team comprising Johanna Sethowa, Prince Madume, Londeka Mavimbela, and Sibusiso Msibi also snatched a silver in the 10km event.
Individual Brilliance: Seasoned athlete Themba Thingane delivered a brilliant individual performance, securing another silver medal.
Adding Bronze
Two bronze medals rounded out the tally: Sibusiso Msibi earned a bronze in the gruelling individual men’s 10km race. From the UJ women’s 2km race team, the combination of Khunedi Mashishi, Refiloe Motlohi and Faith Mabhena secured a bronze.
