The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) rugby team continued a winning streak in the fifth round of the 2021 Varsity Cup tournament against the University of Free State (UFS) Shimlas on Tuesday, 27 April 2021. Finishing with a 34-32 lead, the match was a game of two halves, with UJ dominating the first half and Shimlas launching a comeback in the second half.
This is the Orange Army’s second win in the second bubble of the rugby campaign, following a first win against Nelson Mandela University (NMU) MADIBAZ last week Thursday, 22 April 2021. This was after a sloppy start in the first bubble in the beginning of the tournament, with UJ having lost all three matches. The University aims to finish in the top four of the competition, a position that will advance them to the semi-finals.
“Congratulations to our boys again for winning the second match in the FNB Varsity Cup tournament. They have shown the determination to be victorious in the remaining matches, as demonstrated by the way they started their recent games in the second bubble of the competition. I am confident that their performance will earn them points and that they will finish among the top teams,” says Ms Nomsa Mahlangu, Senior Director, UJ Sport.
UJ will be looking to continue the winning momentum if they are to finish among the top teams at the end of the tournament in late May 2021. “We’re very proud of the boys and we wish them all the best in the remaining four matches of the tournament,” says Dr Nolitha Vukuza, Senior Executive Director: University Relations, Student Affairs and UJ Sport.
UJ will take on the University of Western Cape (UWC) on Friday, 30 April 2021 at 15:00 in the sixth round of the FNB Varsity Cup rugby tournament in Pretoria.
