The internationally acclaimed and multi-award winning UJ Choir kicks off 2017 on a high note. The choir performed with double Grammy award-winning artists, The Kings Singers, during their South African tour on Sunday, 12 February 2017 at Wits University, Linder Auditorium.
Renowned UJ Choir Master, Renette Bouwer says: “When the opportunity arose to share the stage with The King’s Singers, it was a no-brainer. They are simply the best! I have been a fan of this group since a very young age. I still have a few records of them from those times.”
In addition to performing to capacity audiences and creating highly regarded and much-loved recordings, The King’s Singers share their artistry through numerous workshops and masterclasses around the world. The University of Johannesburg’s young choristers were honoured with a workshop session facilitated by the sextet, dubbed ‘the world champions of acapella singing’.
The workshop session was an inter-cultural extravaganza as the UJ Choir was taught a song called “This Marriage” which they performed with the King Singers. “The UJ Choir African music conductor Sidumo Jacobs also taught everyone at the workshop a set of traditional songs from the African music repertoire, including performing a version of the song Shosholoza”, adds Bouwer.
“The King Singers were left in awe as we performed one Western piece “I will lift my eyes” by Jake Runestad. They didn’t expect the level of refinement from the choir.”
The King’s Singers’ South African tour, presented by North-West University (NWU), will take place in Pretoria, Potchefstroom, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Stellenbosch between 9 and 16 February 2017.
The UJ Choir, started in 2005, has garnered international acclaim in a very short time.
