UJ Biochemistry students take the lead to fight cancer

​The University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s Department of Biochemistry students raised more than R8 600, 00 in funds, by shaving and spray-painting UJ students’ and staff members’ hair, in support of raising cancer awareness. This was the first cancer awareness campaign undertaken by the department at Kingsway Campus on Friday, 02 March 2012.

March is declared cancer awareness month in South Africa. Various organisations and people create awareness around cancer, and raise funds to support people affected by the disease. All the money is donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

Students in the Biochemistry’s Cancer Research Group (CRC) analyse and study the ability of novel metal compounds and indigenous medicinal plants to induce cell death in cancer cells. By doing so, the students, together with Dr Marianne Cronje, Head of Department:Biochemistry and Supervisor of CRC, took the lead in this initiative to create awareness about cancer at UJ.
“The volunteers worked hard at making the CANSA shavathon a big success. The message was loud and clear on the day – ‘Fight Cancer and support Cancer Survivors!’” said Siobhan Jenkins, a Biochemistry Masters’ student who organised the shavathon.
The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Kinta Burger, also supported the initiative by having her hair sprayed in multiple colours on the day.
Students studying Chemistry also volunteered their time in helping out at the shavathon. The Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCAD)’s Peer Buddies were also spray-painting students’ hair at the Kingsway Campus.
