In an impressive display, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Athletics Club excelled at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross-Country Championship in Germiston on 16 August 2025. Coach Roger Haitengi’s team secured a total of nine medals: five gold, three silver, and one bronze. This impressive haul highlights the club’s strength across multiple age categories and distances.
A Golden Performance

The UJ athletes claimed five gold medals in a variety of races, demonstrating their depth and versatility. In the Grandmaster Men 65-69 category, Arrigo Ferri finished strong with a time of 26:07.1. The Senior Women’s 2km and Senior Men’s 2km races saw UJ sweep the top spots, with Khunedi Mashishi and Boikanyo Motlhamme both taking home gold. Young talent also shone, with Faith Mabhena dominating the Under 23 Women’s 4km and Sibusiso Msibi clinching gold in the Under 23 Men’s 4km.
Silver and Bronze Contributions

UJ’s medal count was further bolstered by three silver and one bronze medal. Sanele Msomi secured a silver in the Senior Men’s 2km, while Johannah Sethowa earned a second-place finish in the Senior Women’s 4km. The Under 23 Women’s 4km was a huge success for UJ, with Londeka Mavimbela adding a silver medal to Faith Mabhena’s gold. Lastly, Kgopotso Shokane completed the medal haul with a hard-fought bronze in the Women’s 10km race.
