The Athletics and Rowing Clubs of various universities concluded their 2024 University Sport South Africa (USSA) championships in Gqeberha and Port Alfred on Saturday, 14 September. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) athletes secured four gold medals in the USSA cross-country 4km and 10km events for both men and women, while UJ’s women’s A and B rowing teams earned silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In Gqeberha, UJ athletics won three gold medals in the men’s 4km and 10km categories, including a gold medal for Letsepa Madume and a bronze for Lehlohonolo Lusiti. The ladies’ 10km team also put their best foot forward, grabbing a silver medal overall in the competition.

On the waters in Port Alfred, Coach Sizwe Ndlovu’s troops also performed well. The UJ women’s teams were the most improved teams this year, while their male counterparts finished in 4th place overall.
The University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) led the overall standings in first position with the University of Cape Town (UCT) finishing just below the UJ ladies in third position in the women’s A section.
The men’s A section title went to UCT, with UP-Tuks following in second and Stellenbosch University coming behind the Pretoria side in third place.
