UJ Arts & Culture proudly congratulates Muneyi (Music) and Modise Sekgothe (Poetry) on being named 2025 Standard Bank Young Artist Award recipients—an honour recognising South Africa’s most exciting creative talents.
Both artists are alumni of the University of Johannesburg (UJ), where they were students and active participants in the UJ Arts Academy, a flagship programme of UJ Arts & Culture. Their success is a powerful testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and holistic development across disciplines.
“This is more than a win for two immensely talented artists—this is a win for access to the arts and what is possible when we make space for creative exploration in higher education,” says Pieter Jacobs, Head of UJ Arts & Culture.
The achievements of Muneyi and Modise Sekgothe affirm the transformative power of the arts at UJ—not just as a form of self-expression, but as a platform for growth, emotional intelligence, and lifelong skills development. Through the UJ Arts Academy, registered students from any field of study are encouraged to explore their creative potential and contribute meaningfully to the university’s dynamic cultural life.
Meet the 2025 Standard Bank Young Artist Award Winners:
Muneyi (Music)
Originally from Limpopo, Muneyi creates music that is a rich blend of memory, myth, and meaning. Deeply rooted in Tshivenda storytelling traditions, his work draws inspiration from his Makhulu (grandmother) and explores themes of love, identity, and heritage. His sound transcends language, offering a soulful and resonant experience that speaks to the heart.
Modise Sekgothe (Poetry)
A powerful voice in spoken word poetry, Modise Sekgothe has performed on international stages from Washington DC to Gothenburg and Brussels. His work pushes the boundaries of poetry as a performance art, blending rhythm, sound, and narrative to create immersive and thought-provoking experiences.
Their success offers inspiration to the next generation of creatives emerging from the UJ Arts Academy—proving that with the right support, platforms, and encouragement, students can shape influential and globally relevant artistic careers.
As UJ continues to realise its Strategic Goals, these recognitions underscore the value of a student-centred learning environment that embraces artistic exploration and cultural expression as key drivers of innovation and personal growth.
