A senior delegation from the University of Johannesburg which included Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Vice-Chancellor and Principal and Prof. Saurabh Sinha, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Internationalisation, visited the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) from the 25th to 27th February 2020.
The visit was aligned with UJ’s vision to expand the university’s Pan African footprint, to drive innovation on the continent by being the leaders in Industry 4.0 and to strategically partner with institutions on the continent to build capacity in critical areas.
Engagements took place with colleagues from the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Veterinary Science and the College of Health Sciences at UZ. Further to the above, Prof Sinha presented on Industry 4.0 and the potential for collaboration.
The visit culminated with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and University of Zimbabwe (UZ) signing a Memorandum of Understanding for academic collaboration.
Due to the leadership of Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UJ and Prof Paul Mapfumo, Vice-Chancellor, UZ – the memorandum paves the way for the following:
1. Joint Master’s degree in Sustainable Urban Planning and Development (this programme is already offered at UJ).
2. Joint programme for visiting academics between UZ and UJ; the UJ Faculty of Health Sciences and UZ College of Health Sciences identified an area relating to human anatomy, zoonosis and immunology.
3. Innovation by Bus (formerly Africa By Bus) initiative for study abroad programmes; the programme is proposed for the winter school period in Johannesburg. This period allows for participation at UJ’s winter school programmes for African Insights and Artificial Intelligence
