Professor Michael Henning, from the Department of Mathematics within the Faculty of Science, and Associate Professor Alex Broadbent, from the Department of Philosophy within the Faculty of Humanities, are typical examples of people who push the boundaries of discovery and progress. Professor Henning, regarded as a world-leader in domination theory in graphs, is the recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for Outstanding Researcher of the Year, and Associate Professor Alex Broadbent – who teaches philosophy at the University – is the receiver of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for The Most Promising Young Researcher of the Year.
Professor Thea de Wet, from the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies within the Faculty of Humanities is being recognised with the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teacher Excellence Award. Also being acknowledged for their teaching excellence are Mr Sibusiso Mdletshe, from the Department of Radiography within the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Dr Panos Lazanas, from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.
The Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for Exceptional Service Beyond the Call of Duty is bestowed on a group but owning to the individual contribution of each. Professor Chris Landsberg, Mr Thompson Mkansi, Ms Ingrid Waldeck and DrJoe Manyaka are recognised for their diligent, creative and exemplary manner in which they performed as members of the UJ Task Team which facilitated the hosting of the United States of America’s President, Dr Barack Obama in July. Also receiving this award for his instrumental role in the development of an innovative electronic/virtual system, isMr Tinus van Zyl. Through the UJ’s Mobi Enquiry System he and his team significantly mitigated physical walk-ins, and enhanced the efficiency during the final selection and admission process following the release of the Grade 12 results in January 2013.
