14-15 June 2016
We co-hosted the TIPS Annual Forum 2016, in partnership with CCRED and the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), and in association with the Departments of Trade and Industry and Performance Monitoring and Evaluation. The theme of this year’s Forum was “Industrialisation and the Mining Economy”. The keynote speaker was Prof Sam Wangwe. Sessions addressed issues such as ownership patterns in the mining sector, mining in support of industrial development, financial flows, sustainable growth, industrial development, mining communities and migrancy, and mineral beneficiation. Speakers came from South Africa, the region and beyond, including Dr Paul Jourdan, Dr Neva Makgetla, Dr Nelson Oppong, Dr Michiko Iizuka, Dr Sonwabile Mnwana, Dr Judith Fessehaie, Duma Gqubule and Dr Ewa Karwowski. Our SARChI postdoctoral research fellows Dr Lorenza Monaco and Dr Ferran Portella-Carbo both chaired sessions. The conference was held at UJ’s School of Tourism and Hospitality. The conference was a great success and we are pleased to have been part of it.
