The Orange Link bridge shines bright as UJ turns 20

As the University of Johannesburg (UJ) celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025, the Institution is embracing the opportunity to reflect on its growth and reimagine its campus in ways that speak directly to its future. Central to these celebrations is transforming the Kingsway Campus bridge into a vibrant, signature landmark. Named, The Orange Link, the bridge is a visual centrepiece, which is a literal and symbolic passageway between where UJ has come from and where it is headed.

The Vice-Chancellor of UJ, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, views this as more than a structural upgrade. “We are marking a significant milestone, not only through celebration but through meaningful transformation,” he said. “The bridge stands as a visible reminder of our collective journey and our commitment to reimagining what a university can be in the 21st century.”

The bridge’s design reflects the vibrant character of UJ. Its striking orange palette, immediately recognisable, is brought to life through energy-efficient LED lighting, giving the structure a glowing presence after sunset. This bold use of colour and light is making the bridge a compelling feature on campus, both during the day and at night.

Visitors and students crossing the bridge are experiencing more than a walkway with QR code banners, users will be able to interact with key moments in UJ’s history, watching stories of research breakthroughs, student achievements, and alumni who have made a mark in the world.

Professor Mpedi remarked, “We are celebrating an extraordinary milestone in our journey – 20 years of the University of Johannesburg – we mark this moment and look ahead guided by the bold vision of UJ’s Strategic Plan 2035.

From our bold beginnings in 2005, we have grown into a dynamic, inclusive, and forward-thinking institution — one that reflects the energy of our people, the potential of our continent, and the promise of our future.”

Environmental responsibility is also central to the structure’s design. The use of sustainable materials and solar-powered lighting reflects UJ’s commitment to climate-conscious development, while universal accessibility features, including tactile paving for the visually impaired, make the bridge welcoming to all

Prof Mpedi added that the UJ roadmap was clear and ambitious – leading with Impact by making a meaningful difference in society. Unlocking new frontiers through Innovation – driving technological progress and pioneering solutions that shape industries and empower communities. Embracing Inclusivity by building a university that reflects its rich diversity and holding firm to Integrity – acting with transparency, accountability, and social justice.

Prof Mpedi concluded: “UJ’s future is bold, African, and global… and we are just getting started.

The bridge is a visible promise that we remain connected to our purpose. Happy 20th anniversary to the University of Johannesburg! Let’s continue to shape the future together.”
