In the early morning of Friday the 22nd of November 2013, two students were knocked down by a car at the intersection of Kingsway and University Roads in Auckland Park. One student died on the spot while the other was injured. The injured student was immediately admitted to a hospital in Johannesburg and was discharged this morning. Although physically the student is on the mend, the student is understandably traumatised. The University has offered the student counselling from its Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD).
It appears that at the time of the accident, the car that was involved in the accident was being chased by the police. The driver of the car is in police custody and the entire matter is currently in the hands of the Police. The University has verified the identity of the persons involved. The University can confirm that both the injured and deceased students were UJ students. The University can also confirm that the student arrested by the police who allege that he drove the car is also a UJ student.
The University is in shock and deeply regrets the death and injury of students. The University is currently in contact with the families of the students to provide support to the next of kin.
Says Professor Ihron Rensburg, Vice-Chancellor and Principal UJ; “The University community is saddened by the untimely death of a student. Our thoughts and prayers goes to the student’s family and friends. The University also wishes the injured student a speedy recovery and will provide support to the injured student as well as the family and friends of both the students involved in the accident.”
