Research in Geology, Physics, and Tourism and Hospitality at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been recognised in a global ranking system of the top universities worldwide.
On 28 June 2017, the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy released its latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), produced by the same team responsible for the compilation of the renowned Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also widely known as the Shanghai Ranking. This subject ranking recognised the research achievements in these fields of study at UJ.
Ranking indicators include measures of research productivity, research quality, extent of international research collaboration, research published in top-quality journals, and the highest academic recognitions and awards possessed by academic staff members, in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.
Geology
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked among the top 300 universities globally for Earth Sciences research in ShanghaiRanking’s 2017 GRAS. UJ is one of four South African universities ranked for Earth Sciences. See the ranking table here, with UJ shown in the 201-300 band.
The UJ Department of Geology, which houses Earth Sciences at UJ, has a number of researchers recognised by the National Research Foundation (NRF).
Prof Nic Beukes is a leading international researcher who has recently been awarded the 2016/2017 NSTF-South32 Lifetime Award.
Prof Sebastian Tappe, Prof Jan Kramers, Prof Dirk van Reenen, Prof Axel Hofmann and Prof Fanus Viljoen are internationally acclaimed researchers in the Department.
Prof Marina Elburg, Prof Nikki Wagner, Dr Jérémie Lehmann, Prof Bruce Cairncross, Prof Geoff Grantham, Prof Hassina Mouri, and Prof CA Smit are established researchers in South Africa.
Prof Michiel de Kock is recognised as a promising young researcher by the NRF.
Physics

Tourism and Hospitality
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked 34th globally among 100 ranked institutions for research in Hospitality and Tourism Management, in ShanghaiRanking’s 2017 GRAS. UJ is the only South African and only African university ranked for Hospitality and Tourism Management. See the ranking table here.
The UJ School of Tourism and Hospitality, which oversees Hospitality and Tourism Management, has researchers recognised by the National Research Foundation (NRF).
Prof Christian Rogerson is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the Department.
