​The Times Higher Education (THE) has recognised seven subjects of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) as among the top in the world in its latest World University Rankings by Subject results that were released on Wednesday, 06 November 2019.

THE is one of the leading provider of higher education data underpinning university excellence in every continent across the world.

This 2020 edition of THE’s World University Rankings by Subject placed UJ Law in the 151+ band (same as last year), Social Sciences in the 301-400 band (same as last year), and Education in the 301-400 band (same as last year).

Three other UJ subjects (Engineering & Technology, Arts & Humanities, and Computer Science) were given a nod in these rankings results. Engineering & Technology was placed in the band 301-400 (moving up a band from 401-500), while Arts & Humanities was placed in the 301-400 band (same as last year), and Computer Science in the 501-600 band (same as last year).

Notably, Engineering & Technology is ranked jointly with Tshwane University of Technology in first position nationally (301-400 rank band).

In June this year, UJ had also moved up markedly by roughly 59 places into the 501–510 rank band worldwide from 551–560 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2020 published on Wednesday, 19 June 2019. This achievement placed UJ among the top 1.8% of universities globally.

The THE Subject Rankings methodology is based on the same range of 13 performance indicators, grouped into five categories (called ‘pillars’), used in the overall THE World University Rankings. However, the methodological weightings attributed to each performance indicator are recalibrated for each subject to suit the individual subject fields.
