The N1 freeway around Johannesburg, which the SA Road Agency Limited (Sanral) wants to e-toll, is falling apart at various spots – and experts have warned of perilous road conditions.

The area between Beyers Naude and Malibongwe off-ramps has been embattled by poor road conditions, with shifting emergency lanes, and the build up to possible potholes.

Dramatic bumpy motions are some of the words describing the condition of the freeway.Faculty of Civil Engineering professor at the University of Joburg, Tshilidzi Marwala said the freeway posed a threat to motorists.

“Motorists could lose control and plough in to other vehicles, especially at night. Such conditions of the road are attributed towards poor maintenance of roads and the use of poor quality road work materials,” Marulala told The Citizen.

The Automobile Association (AA) has called for Sanral to intervene immediately.
