Teagan Roux and Gerard Mitchell, two University of Johannesburg (UJ) Squash Club players, and coach, Mike Bester, were part of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) team raising the country’s flag in Egypt from 7 to 13 November 2022. They competed in the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Squash World University Championship Squash.
The tournament had fifty-six (56) athletes from different countries registered.
Bester coached the USSA squash team. Roux played three matches, winning two and losing one. She won against Chaewon Song and Celine Walser, losing to Marta Dominguez in the individual women’s category.
Mitchell played five matches, winning three and losing two. He lost to Toufik Mekhalfi and Seung Min Park, winning against Yong Jung Lee, Shota Yasunari and Yuta Ando in the individual men’s category.
Team South Africa finished in 8th position.
“For the UJ Squash Club, it is a good achievement to have our three members representing the country in the FISU World University Championship. Moreover, having the UJ Head Coach coaching the USSA Squash team is a recognition of our University doing great.
