The University of Johannesburg Confucius Institute (UJCI) is currently opened for registration for students interested in studying Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, Tourism Mandarin, Business Mandarin, HSK Mandarin, Chinese Martial Arts and Chinese Cultural course for the first semester of 2017.
Registration took place from Thursday, 2 February 2017 and will run until the Friday, 17 February 2017. We are proud to announce that the Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, Tourism Mandarin, Business Mandarin Courses have been accredited and are offered at the University of Johannesburg for the first semester of 2017:
1. Basic Mandarin:
This course is designed for students with little or no Chinese language background. It aims to introduce students the fundamentals of Mandarin language.
2. Intermediate Mandarin:
This course is designed for students with some prior knowledge of Chinese language and culture. The aim of this course is to introduce students the further fundamentals of Mandarin by engaging in the following aspects of the language: grammar learning, exercises of Chinese characters, and oral discourse in daily life situations.
3. Tourism Mandarin:
This course is designed for students who have studied Chinese language before and reached a certain language level. The aim of this course is to provide the students with relevant tourism words, commonly used sentence patterns and basic cultural knowledge in many traveling situations in China so that they can develop their communicative skills.
4. Business Mandarin:
This course is designed for students with some prior knowledge of Chinese language and culture. The aim of this course is to provide students with the basic and relevant words, fundamental grammar and commonly used sentence patterns of business Mandarin in many business situations.
The following courses are not accredited however a certificate will be issued by UJCI
1. HSK Mandarin I:
This course is specially designed for fresh starters who have the interests of passing HSK certificates (The Chinese Proficiency Tests, or Chinese Standard Exams organized by Hanban, the headquarters of global Confucius Institutes). Students will learn Pinyin (the Chinese phonetic system), simple characters, as well as basic grammar in this phase of preparation. This course will prepare the students to pass the first level of the Chinese Proficiency Tests, HSK-1.
2. HSK Mandarin II:
This course is designed for students who have some prior knowledge of Chinese language or have already passed HSK-1. It will cover an introduction to the HSK exam structure, HSK-2 vocabulary lists, a range of topics covered in HSK-2, as well as grammar of the language.
3. HSK Mandarin Ⅲ:
This course is designed for students who have some prior knowledge of Chinese language or have already passed HSK-2. It will cover an introduction to the HSK exam structure, HSK-3 vocabulary lists, a range of topics covered in HSK-3, as well as grammar of the language.
4. Featured Course:
· Chinese Martial Arts
We are glad to introduce a specially designed featured course of Chinese Martial Arts. Our professional master will lead martial arts lovers to explore the real sense of Chinese kongfu.
5. Cultural Courses:
· Tai Ji (the traditional Chinese martial art of Tai Chi)
Registration process:
For UJ accredited courses i.e Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, Tourism Mandarin and Business Mandarin please follow the steps below on how to register:
Step One: An amount of R3 870 is payable upon registration at Student Finance at Kingsway Campus.
Step Two: Go to finance department to be unblocked.
Step three: Go to the Faculty Officer Ms Amanda Mbozana together with proof of payment and a list of modules you need to register for. Ms Amanda is situated at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Johannesburg Kingsway Campus, office number: 234, C-Ring, APK.
For non-accredited UJCI courses, please fill the UJCI registration form and send through the proof of payment to Gugulethu on gugulethun@uj.ac.za.

Course Duration: The Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, Tourism Mandarin and Business Mandarin will start from 13th February, 2017 after registration and last 12weeks with two class sessions per week. Students are required to attend all of the 24 sessions of the whole semester.
The HSK Mandarin I, HSK Mandarin II, HSK Mandarin Ⅲ, Chinese Martial Arts and Tai ji will start from 13th February, 2017 after registration and last 10 weeks with two class sessions per week. Students are required to attend all of the 20 sessions of the whole semester.
Teaching Venues:
The UJ accredited courses will be offered at UJ Kingsway campus (Venues-To Be Confirmed).
The non-accredited courses will be offered at UJCI offices at 9 Molesely Avenue, Auckland Park, Johannesburg, 2092. Please click on the google link below for directions:

Access to campus:
Once you register, you automatically get a student card (access card) for which you do at the enrolment centre.
Payment and Tuition Fees:
UJ Accredited modules; Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, Tourism Mandarin and Business Mandarin course excludes approved UJ NSFAS students and the missing middle from paying the tuition fee of R2940.00 per module. This will be subsided by UJCI. However, those that are able to afford tuition fees will be charged according to the standard UJ tuition fee at R2940.00 per module.
Furthermore, for those people who are not UJ staff and students each UJ Accredited module: Basic Mandarin, Intermediate Mandarin, Tourism Mandarin and Business Mandarin course will be charged according to the standard UJ tuition fee at R2940.00 per module.
The registration fee for each HSK Mandarin I, HSK Mandarin II, HSK Mandarin Ⅲ, Chinese Martial and Arts course is R200 with learning materials included. For non-UJ students, each course will only cost R1000 for the whole period of 20 sessions.
Size: In order to achieve the best teaching outcome, the maximum size of each class is 30, and the minimum size is 5.
