The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Senior Men’s Football Team goes into the 2023 FNB Varsity Football tournament with high confidence. This comes after having finished in the top 2 of the tournament in the past two years and the recent promotion to the SAFA ABC Motsepe League.
UJ will play their two opening encounters away against North West University at the NWU-Mafikeng Stadium on Thursday, 27 July 2023 and the University of Western Cape (UWC) on 3 August 2023. The rest of the UJ fixtures will be played at home at the UJ Soweto Stadium on 10 (against Vaal University of Technology), 17 (against University of Fort Hare), 24 (Central University of Technology), 31 (University of Free State) August and 7 (Tshwane University of Technology) September 2023 all at 15:00pm.
Recently, the Orange Army was promoted to the SAFA ABC Motsepe League after winning all two games of the Johannesburg region playoffs featuring four winners in June, and three of their four Gauteng Provincial Playoffs in July 2023. They also won the University Sport South Africa (USSA) championship in Secunda, Mpumalanga in December 2022.
The UJ Senior Men’s Football team was crowned champions of the 2022/23 SAFA Johannesburg Regional League Blue Stream in June 2023 and finished as runners-up in the same tournament in 2021.
“It was a great achievement to be promoted to the SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League because we played against five regional champions in Sedibeng, Tshwane, Mogale City, Ekurhuleni, and Johannesburg streams. This is a huge confidence boost for the boys going into the 2023 FNB Varsity Football campaign.
“Having played the Provincial League playoffs away from home and winning the first three of those four important matches, that will help our players in the next two away fixtures in the Varsity Football tournament,” says Karabo Mogudi, Head Coach: UJ Senior Men’s Football Team.
Coach Mogudi added that his players will have the confidence and the belief to perform well away from home.
