Outgoing member of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Council, Mr Frans Baleni, has praised the institution for achieving academic excellence and student success. Speaking at the annual UJ Council Awards on Friday, 29 November 2024, in Melrose, Mr Baleni said UJ continues to set the standard of academic excellence, innovation and social impact – not just in South Africa but globally.
“Academic excellence is the cornerstone of any world-class university. UJ has firmly cemented its place among the top universities globally, a testament to the dedication of our staff and students,” said Mr Baleni, who stood in for the UJ Chair of Council, Ms Xoliswa Kakana.

The role of the Council is one of oversight, ensuring the university remains steadfast on its path, and aligned to its vision. Mr Baleni is a long-serving member of the UJ Council, having been in the role for just over 15 years. His term ends at the end of this year. Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, paid tribute to Mr Baleni.
“This year’s edition of the UJ Council Awards is also an opportunity to bid a heartfelt farewell to Mr. Frans Baleni, a long-serving member of the UJ Council, whose steadfast contributions have left an indelible mark on our institution. We are deeply indebted to you and the entire UJ Council for the leadership and contribution that have propelled the University to new heights,” said Prof Mpedi.
