The 2022 netball season has been fruitful for University of Johannesburg (UJ) netball player, Nomfundo Mngomezulu, who has so far won the Telkom Netball League (TNL) with the Golden Fireballs after being offered a professional contract by Netball South Africa in June. She is also in the netball squad which will represent the country in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later this month.
Mngomezulu was named in the team of the tournament by Supersport commentators and presenters alongside UJ teammates, Monica Gomases and Monique Reynecke with UJ coach and manager, Bongiwe Msomi.
“The past few months have been great and I’m happy and grateful that I was able to play with Coach Bongiwe Msomi. Since 2019, my netball journey has been really good as I continued to improve my game. I have been growing each year and it is a great experience to play with different players in different teams,” explains Mngomezulu, speaking on her experience with Golden Fireballs and playing in the TNL.
The second-year diploma student (Road Transport Management – freight) joined the UJ netball in March 2021. The goal shooter from St Lucia in Dukuduku Khula village in KwaZulu-Natal Province, won the Goal Shooter of the Year at the 2021 KZN Netball Awards.
The former Kingdom Queens player started playing netball in primary school. She has now set her eyes on playing for the Spar Proteas in the 2023 Netball World Cup in South Africa.
