Being a woman in a male-dominated industry can be challenging at times as women encounter additional challenges. Lusca Ngwepe, inspired by the idea that one can change the world, challenge the status quo and the monopoly in the world of construction, is testament of one who turned her vision into reality.

Determined to make a difference in her own country, Ms Ngwepe decided to follow a career in engineering. Through hard work and personal application, this young South African, has excelled in her chosen field of study and graduated from UJ with a Master’s Degree in Construction Management( with a Distinction) during the 2017 spring graduation sessions.

Her research focused on sustainable building practices in the South African construction industry. “I’m passionate about the construction industry and the environment. Therefore, I decided to combine my two passions for my Master’s thesis, and explored how the construction industry can be energy efficient and thus reduce environmental issues,” she said.

Ms Ngwepe has plans to explore the quantity surveying and construction management field and she is hoping to pursue her PhD after 2 or 3 years.

She concluded: “This accomplishment would not have been possible without the guidance of my lecturers, supervisors and my supportive family and friends. I’m proud to be associated with UJ.”
