The University of Johannesburg (UJ) recently concluded its Autum Graduation ceremonies for 2024, with more than 10 000 graduates walking across the stage. During the graduation season, which began on 14 March 2024, a total of 7,500 undergraduate qualifications were awarded, alongside postgraduate degrees, including 2030 honours, 286 Master’s and 101 Doctoral degrees.
UJ also bestowed honorary doctorates upon exceptional individuals who represent diverse realms of expertise and embody UJ’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and societal impact. The recipients of the honorary doctorates were Mr Thebe Ikalafeng – Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa), Ms Nonkululeko Gobodo – Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) and Prof Raphael Kaplinsky – Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa).
Professor Bettine van Vuuren, the Registrar at UJ, said these graduations not only symbolise personal triumphs for the graduates, but they are also a significant milestone towards enriching the well-being of their families and their communities and society at large. She added that the true measure of success in education extends beyond the mere quantity of graduates. “Rather, it lies in the quality of intellect and character they bring to the wider community.”
Commenting on the honorary doctorates, she said: “An Honorary Doctorate serves as recognition for individuals who have made substantial contributions to a particular field or has offered exceptional service to society, closely aligning with the University’s vision, mission, values, and strategic objectives.”
Reflecting on the graduation ceremonies, Prof George Letlhokwa Mpedi, UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal said: “Watching the graduates crossing the stage amidst the jubilant scenes reminded me of the immense role that our University plays in the lives of our students and their families. I was impressed by the diversity of our graduates, and I am confident that the qualifications will open new doors for the graduates as they embark on a journey.”
