Sabelo Dhlamini has surged to the top of the global athletics rankings, clocking the fastest 400m hurdles time of the 2025 season at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) League Meeting in Germiston on Saturday, 22 February 2025. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) athlete secured a gold medal with a time of 0:48.74, leading UJ Athletics to a dominant performance that yielded 37 gold, 23 silver, and 14 bronze medals.

UJ athletes continued their impressive form, delivering outstanding performances for the third consecutive weekend in the 2025 CGA league meetings.
Dhlamini’s world-leading time follows a string of remarkable achievements by UJ athletes. Just two weeks prior, Shirley Nekhubui broke her own national 300m sprint record (36.36 seconds), Udeme Okon set a world-leading time in the men’s 300m sprint (31.83 seconds), and Leandri Holtzhausen established a new national record in the hammer throw (66.54m).
“I’m still in shock; it hasn’t sunk in yet. My training partners have since constantly made me aware of this achievement, to remind me of what I have done. I just entered the top 10 of all-time fast runners in South African history in this event. However, I missed qualifying for the World Championship by 0.2 seconds. For now, I’m looking forward to the ASA Grand Prix and the National Championship – I can still use these competitions to qualify for the World Championship,” says Dhlamini.
These outstanding performances come at a crucial time as UJ Athletics prepares to host the 5th CGA League Meeting on 14 and 15 March, followed by the ASA Athletics Grand Prix on 19 March 2025 at the UJ Athletics Stadium in Westdene.

The UJ senior and junior athletes are looking to qualify for the upcoming international competitions. These include competitions such as the Junior and Senior World Championships, World Indoor Athletics, African Juniors and the FISU World Student Games.
