Botany Students Tour the Joburg Market

Joburg Market Tour Labcoats

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Each year the Botany and Plant Biotechnology Department Honours students embark on a tour of the Joburg Market. This year was the fourth instalment of the excursion aimed at exposing learners to the operations of fresh produce markets. The Joburg Market is the largest fresh produce market in South Africa that supplies fruits and vegetables to retailers, restaurateurs, exporters, and general consumers. The class was chaperoned by Dr Nomali Ngobese. Mr Craig Pillay (Quality Assurance Manager) together with Ms Thandiwe Dlodlo (Marketing Officer) and Ms Tshegofatso Maakwe (Client Services Manager) were the market tour guides of the day. The students enjoyed the exposure and tasted a variety of fruits. They visited facilities such as the trading halls, consignment and banana ripening sections, as well as the produce testing laboratories to review how these fare against those in international markets.
