Olympic Games athlete Lynique Prinsloo, a BEd in Senior Phase and FET Teaching student was named sports star of the year at the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) awards gala dinner at the Johannesburg Country Club on Thursday night, 20 October 2016.
Prinsloo, who grew up in Springs but now commutes between Pretoria and Johannesburg, was named Sportswoman of the Year after a string of successes, including a gold-medal performance at the SA champs.
The runner-up spot in the women’s category went to another Olympian Anel Oosthuizen, who placed 63rd in Rio in the 20km walk and fourth at the African Championships. Oosthuizen, a BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching student was also awarded second place in the student-athlete award category for her race walking prowess combined with her academic achievement of 74.16 per cent. First year BEd in Senior Phase and FET Teaching Tyson Dlungwana was named Age Group Sportsman of the Year. Ndlungwana is in the UJ hockey first team.
