Young people in Africa need to actively participate in delivering the continent’s human development targets and goals. This was the message from Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the Chairperson of the African Union, that encouraged students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Tuesday, 08 December 2015.
Speaking during the Pre-Deployment Orientation and Assessment Training Programme of the AU-Youth Volunteer Corps’, Dr Dlamini-Zuma said that she aims to deepen the status of young people in Africa. The two week training programme, hosted by UJ, will run until Friday, 18 December 2015.
“It is important to share skills, knowledge, creativity and learning to build a more integrated continent to strengthen Africa’s relevance in the globalised world,” she said.
Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Postgraduate Studies, Library and Information Centre, UJ urged the students to take full advantage of the AU training programme as it creates a life changing experience and will change their perception on other African countries and heir continent at large.
Dr Dlamini-Zuma concluded”: “This programme promotes Pan-Africanism. Be a responsible youth, believe in yourselves and transform Africa.”
The African Union Youth Volunteer Corps (AU-YVC) is a continental development programme that recruits and works with youth volunteers, to work in all 54 countries across the African Union. AU-Youth Volunteers will serve primarily in the following fields: Education, Health and HIV/ AIDS, Peace and Security, Information and Communications Technology, Business and Youth Entrepreneurship, Agriculture and Environment.
