Annual Banking Law Update 2024: Showcasing UJ’s leadership in banking and finance law

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) continues to demonstrate its leadership in the field of banking and finance law through the well-established Annual Banking Law Update (ABLU). This flagship project draws participants from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies, reinforcing UJ’s position as a thought leader in this critical area. The ABLU conference is not only a platform for sharing cutting-edge developments but also contributes to scholarly impact through its associated book, based on the presentations delivered at the event.

ABLU 2024, held on 16 October 2024, brought together more than 150 attendees and was fully subscribed, reflecting its continued relevance and appeal. The conference covered a wide range of topics, including both traditional banking law and emerging technology-related issues. Presentations were delivered by leading experts with backgrounds in law, criminology, finance, banking, and regulation, hailing from diverse jurisdictions such as Australia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

As part of the ABLU tradition, conference attendees received the ABLU book early in the event. This comprehensive volume provided detailed insights into the presentations, allowing participants to reflect on the material at their leisure. Importantly, the book serves as a lasting resource, enabling attendees to apply the knowledge in their own research and professional contexts, thereby enhancing research visibility and impact.

One of the highlights of ABLU 2024 was the range of voices and perspectives represented. Nonkululeko Sefolo, Senior Counsel at TransUnion, praised the event: “ABLU is a platform to share and discuss the latest developments and challenges in the banking law field. […] A huge well done to Dr Cayle Lupton and the team on putting together such an amazing event, with relevant topics to ponder and apply in our profession.”

Similarly, Natashia Asia, a UJ student, shared her experience: “The event was filled with insightful discussions, and I feel truly honoured to have been part of it. I walked away with a wealth of knowledge and have the opportunity to connect with brilliant minds in the field of banking law.”

The success of ABLU 2024 underscores UJ’s commitment to fostering academic and professional excellence, as well as its contribution to advancing banking and finance law both locally and internationally.
