It’s that time of the year again and #VarsityThatRocks will shake social media platforms with the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup rugby tournament scheduled for February, March and April around the country at the eight qualifying universities. In this year’s FNB Varsity Cup campaign, the FNB UJ Rugby Senior Men’s Team will play four home games at the UJ Rugby Stadium in Westdene and three away games.
The UJ FNB Rugby Young Guns will play six games in the FNB Varsity Young Guns Tournament (three home and three away games). The Senior Women’s Rugby Team will play two fixtures in the FNB Varsity Cup tournament (one home and one away).
In the Varsity Cup tournament, the Senior Men’s Team will play their opening match against Central University of Technology (CUT) on Monday, 19 February in the Free State Province.

“Our Teams are working hard to prepare for this year’s editions of the Varsity Cup tournament, We aim to reach the Semi-Finals with both our 1st and the Young Guns teams. Our ladies played in the finals last year and we would like to achieve the same this year and hopefully win it,” says Bongani Mashiya, Manager: UJ Rugby Club.
Mashiya added, “In 2023, the FNB UJ Rugby senior team finished in 5th place in the FNB Varsity Cup rugby tournament, just two points shy of the semi-final spot. Had the UJ team won the narrowly lost games against Wits and UFS, we would be telling a different story.”
The UJ Senior Men’s Team will play the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup tournament without former players Mpho Kubheka, former co-captain Kelvin Kanenungo, Shaun Bexter and Elijah Kwitonda.
The FNB UJ Young Guns team will play six home and away fixtures.

The Senior Women’s Team will play their two fixtures against UWC on 22 March at UJ Stadium, UFH on 5 April at Davidson Stadium in the Eastern Cape.
The Orange Army, as UJ is affectionately known, will travel across South Africa playing the Gentlemen’s game to represent the UJ brand.
