The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Athletics Club delivered a masterclass in regional sporting dominance at the recent Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) provincial league meeting. Hosting the event at the UJ Athletics Stadium in Westdene, the “Orange Army” secured a staggering total of 82 medals, firmly establishing their position at the forefront of South African collegiate athletics.
Exhilarating performance
UJ fielded a massive contingent of over 300 athletes, competing across sprints, middle-distance runs, and field events including jumps (long, high, and triple) and throws (javelin and shotput). The club’s final tally showcased both depth and elite-level talent, clinching 35 gold, 23 silver and 24 bronze medals.
The momentum began on March 12 in Germiston and carried through to the final days at the UJ Athletics Stadium. Notable gold medalists included Joviale Mbisha, Sabelo Dhlamini, Kamohelo Letebele, Oluchi Ndubueze, Martin Joubert, Ndawana Haitembu, Refiloe Motlohi, Enoch Bokaba, and Tshepo Lefete, among many others.
International presence: Letsile Tebogo
The meet gained significant international prestige with the participation of athletes from Botswana, most notably Olympic Medalist Letsile Tebogo. Utilizing the CGA event as a high-stakes training ground, Tebogo focused on his preparation for the World Athletics Relays, scheduled for 2-3 May 2026, in Botswana – with the coming to the African continent for the first time.
“It’s really good to see people come in numbers to support everyone who is competing here today, though it’s not such a huge championship,” Tebogo remarked. “We are grateful to have them fill the stands.”
Tebogo also highlighted the significance of the upcoming World Athletics Relays, noting that travellers and visitors will be treated to Botswana’s tourism, culture, and sporting prowess.
Elite results and national qualifications
The league meeting served as more than just a medal hunt; it was a platform for world-class performances. Several UJ club members and student-athletes recorded personal bests, national qualification standards, and world-leading times. Key performers included UJ Athletics younger Oluchi Ndubueze (U18 100m in 12.02 seconds), student-athlete Lythe Pillay (400m 44.33 seconds) and club member Cheswill Johnson (100m in 10.07 seconds).
Sabelo Dhlamini secured gold in the senior men’s 400m hurdles on Friday the 13th, citing the event as vital preparation following the recent assembly of the South African national squad at the UJ facilities.
The sheer volume of medals and the presence of world-class international talent underscore UJ’s role as a powerhouse in the athletics community. By blending junior development with senior elite competition, the club continues to foster an environment of excellence that resonates far beyond the provincial level.
