The University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus came alive on Friday evening as the much-anticipated Sing It Out – SIRI 2025 competition took centre stage at Imbizo Hall. The vibrant showcase brought together students from all four UJ campuses, uniting through the power of music, creativity, community spirit and in celebration of UJ turning 20.
Setting the tone for the night, amapiano sensation Nkosazana Daughter delivered a soulful opening performance that had the audience on their feet, an electrifying start to what became an unforgettable evening.
A Celebration of Residence Talent
The Sing It Out initiative began as a campus-level singing competition, where residences from each UJ campus showcased their vocal and performance abilities. From these preliminary rounds, two residences per campus earned the opportunity to represent their campuses in the central SIRI 2025 showdown.
The final featured performances from:
- APB Campus: Ndlovukazi Female Residence and Kilimanjaro Male Residence APK Campus: Cornerstone Male Residence and Oppierif Male Residence
- DFC Campus: Gauta Female Residence, and a collaboration between Phumlani Female and Kopano Female Residences- Pink Spartans)
- SWC Campus: iMbewu Mixed Residence and 4th Mixed Residence
The Judges and the Winners

The talented line-up of judges – Dippy Padi, Slimbaby, Thandekile Bingayi, and Sean from the Duduza Choir – had the difficult task of scoring each act on vocal performance, creativity, and stage presence.
After a night filled with exceptional performances and high-energy competition, iMbewu Mixed Residence proudly claimed first place, followed by Oppierif Residence in second, and Cornerstone Residence in third.

Beyond the competition, Sing It Out- SIRI 2025 reflected the true essence of UJ’s student culture – collaboration, creativity, and community. The event celebrated not only musical talent but also the unity among UJ residences and the spirit of Ubuntu that defines the University of Johannesburg. As the curtains closed on an evening of harmonies, cheers, and vibrant performances, one thing was clear- the voices of UJ students will continue to echo across campuses, inspiring pride and connection through song.
