The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Senior Women’s Netball Team continued their winning streak in Round 4 and 5 at Rembrandt Hall, in Pretoria having been on the road in previous three victories in Stellenbosch and Mahikeng. UJ is on a quest for a maiden Varsity Netball title, after finishing as silver medallists in the past two years.
This past weekend (7 and 8 September 2025) The Orange Army played a Johannesburg derby against Wits University Ladies in Bumper Weekend 2, winning 56-34. They also emerged victorious against Nelson Mandela University with a 57-40 decisive victory, respectively.

In the Wits clash, UJ played with vigor though Wits held firm closing opening quarter with a tight 12-9 lead. However, the Orange Army seized their opportunities in the second quarter through as goal shooter and attacker Kubura Abubakar and Owethu Ngubane sinking in the goals up front. Mupenda was in her usual fine form in defence stopping Wits’ attempts to catch up on the scoreboard.
At halftime, UJ had stretched their lead to 22-16, also pulling away in the third quarter with a 42-19 lead and ultimately ending the match with a whopping 56-34 final score at fulltime.
In Round 5 on Monday, UJ led with a marginal 21-18 score at halftime. After the break, UJ pressed harder, as goal shooter Kubura Abubakar pulled the strings for UJ to stretched their lead to 39-30. The Eastern Cape side (Madibaz) found it difficult to keep up with UJ’s tempo, with the final score closing at 57-40 at the final whistle blow for fulltime.
UJ senior players Tarle Mathe and Owethu Ngubane played their last Varsity Netball 2025 match for UJ as they join the national SPAR Proteas on an international duty in New Zealand.
