UJ Athletics dominates USSA Champs, shines at ASA Seniors

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Athletics Club delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 University Sport South Africa (USSA) Track and Field Championships held at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane. UJ athletes amassed a remarkable 322 points, securing the championship title by a significant margin of 44 points over the University of Pretoria (278). The Orange Army’s dominance was further highlighted by their impressive medal haul of 33 medals, comprising 10 gold, 11 silver, and 12 bronze.

Adding to their triumph, a contingent of talented UJ students has been selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from 16 to 27 July 2025.

UJ athletes set the tone early in the USSA Championships, with Phemelo Ntoe, Prince Madume, and Katlego Madiope sweeping the podium in the men’s 21km race, claiming gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. In the women’s 21km event, UJ athletes also showcased their endurance, finishing in 2nd, 5th, and 7th places.

North-West University finished third overall with 276 points, followed by the University of Free State in fourth place with 200 points.

UJ athletes impress at ASA Senior National Championships:

Prior to their USSA victory, UJ athletes made a significant impact at the Athletics South Africa Senior National Championships in Potchefstroom. Joviale Mbisha and Sabelo Dhlamini emerged as gold medallists, winning in the women’s 100m sprint and the men’s 400m Hurdles, respectively.

The formidable UJ quartet of Precious Molepo, Malesela Senona, Shirley Nekhubui, and Retshidisitswe Mlenga blazed to gold in the exhilarating 4x100m mixed relay. Another UJ quartet, comprising Tsebo Matsoso, Cheswill Johnson, Retshidisitswe Mlenga, and Moss Mvuyo, also secured gold in the men’s 4x100m relay.

Khunedi Mashishi and Kgopotso Shokane each claimed a silver medal in the 4x400m mixed relay. UJ’s Enoch Bokaba earned a bronze medal in the challenging 3000m steeplechase. Joining him on the bronze podium were Alu Vilankulu, Jenna Stolz, and Emmarentia Germishuysen in the women’s 4x100m relay.

Overall, UJ athletes brought home a total of seven gold, five silver, and three bronze medals from the ASA Senior National Championships.
