The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is hosting a two-day Mini Open Days event from the 26th and 27th of June 2024 at its Auckland Park Kingsway Campus. This annual event is a key part of UJ’s recruitment strategy, designed to provide prospective students and their families with an in-depth look at why the university is a leading choice for higher education in South Africa.

A vibrant welcome
As attendees arrived at UJ’s bustling campus, they were welcomed by a vibrant atmosphere filled with excitement and potential. Information booths, interactive sessions, and campus tours were carefully organised to ensure that visitors could thoroughly explore all aspects of university life.
“We want prospective students to feel at home from the moment they arrive,” said Mr Pieter Durandt, Manager of Student Marketing at UJ. “Our goal is to provide a comprehensive view of what UJ has to offer, both academically and socially.”
Natalia Edwards and her daughter Taslin found the day fulfilling. “The day was 100% what we came here for. It was productive and successful. All the information we wanted, we got,” said Natalia. Taslin hopes to study business at UJ.
Engaging academic showcases
Over the two days, various faculties and departments showcase their programmes through engaging presentations and workshops. Prospective students had the opportunity to interact with faculty members, current students, and alumni, gaining insights into the academic rigour and innovative research opportunities available at UJ.
Joe Seboge, a career developer from Meadowlands, Soweto attended the Open Day to get information brochures for different high schools in Soweto.
“I came here to get the information so I can invite other schools in Soweto to come to these Open Days. A majority of the schools in Soweto don’t register for these events and that is a challenge. So I have made arrangements with the UJ administration to have those schools come through. I need to bring the learners here physically so they can experience UJ as a campus for themselves.”

Both Tenisha van Schoon’s parents, Nadenza and Ashton, accompanied her to the UJ Open Day from their home in Ennerdale.
The Grade 12 learner said she was interested in a business degree from College of Business and Economics (CBE).
“I found the CBE exhibition stand to be very informative and it helped me a lot.”
Her mother, Nadenza, said the Open Day was insightful and said she hoped Tenisha would be accepted to study at UJ next year.
Showcasing vibrant student life
Beyond academics, UJ’s Mini Open Days highlighted the vibrant student life on campus. Visitors explored the numerous student organisations, sports facilities, and activities that contribute to a well-rounded university experience.
Paige Julius, from Coronationville, attended the Open Day with her friends.
“I really wanted to experience and have a look at what options I have. UJ wasn’t initially an option for me until I came here and heard the introduction and I realised it promotes black empowerment and there are so many different sports which I didn’t even know about. The resources on offer are efficient so I am sold. I am looking forward to studying law.”
Kelly Sletcher from Johannesburg and Lex van der Merwe from Germiston spent the day getting information from all the exhibition stands.
“I am really interested in the arts. I don’t have a specific course that I am eyeing but I am just here to get to know the opportunities that are available. I definitely got enough information,” said Kelly. Lex said she was more interested in the sciences, in particular Ecology.
“I feel well informed today and will be able to make a good decision going forward.”
Comprehensive support for prospective students
UJ’s commitment to student success was evident in the detailed information sessions on admissions, scholarships, and financial aid. The recruitment team was on hand to answer questions and provide guidance, ensuring that prospective students had all the information they needed to make an informed decision.
“Our Open Days are all about empowering students with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed. We understand that choosing a university is a significant decision, and we are here to support students every step of the way. The event not only showcased UJ’s academic excellence and dynamic student life but also reinforced our commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers,” said Mr Durandt.
