​​The Department of Journalism Film and Television at the Faculty of Humanities recently hosted Denis Beckett for a public lecture. In his lecture Denis Beckett did “a bit of stock-take on where we’re at in South Africa at the moment and proceeded to the proposition that our failings derive from the inadequacy of our politics to contain the society that we are”. He outlined” the next logically inevitable upward step in the conduct of human affairs”. This step, he asserts, “will be pioneered not by the premier-league democracies so much as by middling-to-shaky ones such as ours, whose need is greater. It will disengage the primitive stranglehold of race and will steer us on a stable road toward ever higher levels of social justice”.​
