The academic achievements of four top performing first-year students within the Faculty of Health Sciences were acknowledged by the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Professor André Swart, when he handed over iPads to the students who met the Orange Carpet requirements. The handover ceremony took place on Thursday, 6 March 2014.
The Orange Carpet campaign is especially put together for Grade 12 learners who have excelled in their matric finals, and far surpass the APS score requirements for acceptance to study at the University. The campaign assists during applications and registration periods, by fast tracking their applications to ensure early provisional acceptance into UJ, and also offering benefits which are not available to other students.
“It is not often that we get to see our Orange Carpet students at the office and are grateful when it happens. We will try our best to show them that we believe they have made a wonderful choice by choosing UJ and hope that they will view these gifts as a sign of our commitment, as technology plays a vital role these days, more especially in education,” said Prof Swart.
Learners that are regarded as Orange Carpet candidates are those that achieve an APS score of 40-46 in their Grade 12 results and meet the specific subject requirements for the academic programme they are interested in. The learners must also submit an application to be an Orange Carpet student.
“The aim of this campaign is to acknowledge learners who have shown commitment and received outstanding results, while at the same time encouraging others to do the same. We hope that the gifts we gave to the students will enhance their academic lives and help them towards reaching even better heights here at UJ and in their future careers,” Prof Swart added.
The overall purpose of the campaign is to showcase and celebrate achievers, and also inspire learners in high schools and students at the University to work hard in their studies. The campaign sends out the message that there is a reward for those who are determined and work hard.
