UJ and Chinese university to collaborate on training of future healthcare and engineering professionals

Nursing and engineering students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will be among the major beneficiaries of an academic collaboration between UJ and the Central South University (CSU), a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

The collaboration, centred on academic cooperation and collaboration through a scholarship programmes in teaching and learning, came to fruition with the recent signing of a Memorandum of Agreement on Wednesday, 21 November 2018.

CSU has committed to offering 25 scholarships to deserving students in the areas relating to nursing and engineering, particularly to infrastructure, incl. the railways. The scholarship includes tuition fee, accommodation, medical insurance fee and monthly living allowances. Students will pursue the Master’s or doctoral qualification, collaboratively with a supervisor/co-supervisor on the side of CSU and UJ.

The establishment of specific partnerships with institutions in China is especially significant as China is part of the BRICS economic bloc, along with Russia, Brazil, India and South Africa. These countries face similar challenges, and joint academic enquiry would eventually benefit them and bring help bring solutions to 21st century global challenges.
